What Does a Bestselling Author Read? Here Are Mitch Albom's Picks

No one knows how to spot a great story quite like someone who's written a ton of them — which is why we were so eager to find out which titles Mitch Albom returns to again and again.

Albom is the author of bestsellers like Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven, and he's a favorite of KCM's community. In fact, we featured an excerpt from his 2021 novel The Stranger in the Lifeboat, and Katie chatted with him about 2023's The Little Liar. "I love Mitch Albom," Katie said then. "Ever since he wrote Tuesdays with Morrie, I’ve looked forward to his books. They’re always full of wisdom and humanity."

And now, Albom's got a new work to sink your teeth into: his latest novel, Twice. "It's a story about a guy who has the magical ability to do anything in his life twice — but he has to live with the consequences of the second try. He can't go back and say, I liked the first time," Albom tells us. "When he becomes a man, he finds there's one caveat to the power: It doesn't work with love. And, of course, he has to make a very fateful choice at one point in his life when he falls in love."

It's a page-turner you're sure to fly through, but you don't have to say goodbye to Albom's artistic sensibility when you're done. Below, he shares five other stories he loves deeply, and we have a feeling you'll rave about them just as much as Twice.

Mitch Albom's Favorite BooksA River Runs Through It by Norman MacLean

"If you want a book to transport you to another place, no matter where you are, this is it. A beautifully written novel about growing up and fly fishing and faith. It was his first novel; he was in his 60s when it got published."

Life of Pi by Yann Martel

"I loved this book the first time I read it, and I’ve read it many times over for its tale of adventure — a boy in a boat with a tiger — but also for its underlying message of faith and storytelling."

A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

"Every list like this should have at least one Hemingway book on it. This one speaks for itself."

Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder

"This is the inspiring story of Paul Farmer, who walked away from the temptations of a rich life as a medical genius in America to serve the poor, primarily in Haiti. I have an orphanage in Haiti, and for the last 16 years, I've known Paul’s work well. We corresponded but never met in person before he died suddenly. He's a real hero in my book, and this book is brilliant."

The Royal Road to Romance by Richard Halliburton

"You've probably never heard of this book, but I read it when I was a kid, and it inspired me to dream of doing things beyond my reach. It's about a Princeton-educated guy who decided he’d rather go climb mountains than hang out in an office. I can still leaf through it and see my childhood self dreaming of doing adventurous things."
