Simu Liu gained a few friendships on the Avengers: Doomsday set.
The Shang-Chi star, 36, revealed to PEOPLE at New York Comic-Con that he formed his closest bond on the new superhero film with one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's newest additions. “I mean, I definitely can say for sure, I came away from Doomsday with a lot of really fantastic friendships,” Liu shared.
“Channing Tatum… I wanted to shout him out because he's just one of my favorite human beings. And I just had such a phenomenal time with him onset [and] offset,” Liu said of the 45-year-old actor who plays the superhero Gambit. “He's just, you know, such an admirable person.”

The Barbie actor — who shared a photo with his fellow Doomsday cast members, including Tatum, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Mackie and others in May — opened up about what it was like to join such an all-star lineup. “I was lucky enough to be a part of [Doomsday],” he told PEOPLE, before emphasizing during his Comic-Con panel for the new series The Copenhagen Test about “what an incredible call” it was “to get.”
“I experienced kind of many waves of excitement. I think first getting that call and then learning who else was gonna be there, some of whom I had had the pleasure of meeting and some I had not,” he shared at the panel. “But each and every one of them — just iconic.”

He noted that he was especially jazzed that he got to star with “Sir Ian McKellen [and] Sir Patrick Stewart” — who he said he “grew up watching and idolizing” — and then possibly “having gotten the opportunity to do scenes with them at some point.”
“That may or may not have been better, would be something that I maybe would say if I was in the movie,” he jokingly added.
Liu described the experience starring in Doomsday as something akin to “turning on your TV on a Saturday morning.”

“[Because] I just feel like every single person I was working with through it — that I was fortunate enough to consider a colleague — was somebody that I had literally grown up watching,” he said.
“And then also just the fun of being in a playground where all of those people were somehow wearing spandex, and we’re all there to [play] make believe. It was just an incredible, incredible time,” Liu added.
Avengers: Doomsday, which is directed by Avengers: Endgame filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo, is slated to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
