Arielle Kebbel is giving fans an update on the status of the previously announced John Tucker Must Die sequel.
The actress revealed in March 2024 that she was working on a sequel to her 2006 teen comedy, saying during an Epic Cons Chicago reunion panel alongside costars Jesse Metcalfe and Sophia Bush that there was a script that "does involve all of the O.G. cast."
Kebbel, who next stars in I Can Only Imagine 2 and the Yellowstone spinoff Marshals, was a guest on the Feb. 19 episode of the Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe podcast, where she explained why the long-awaited sequel hasn't come to fruition yet.
"So I started producing a few years ago. One of the first projects I ever sold was a sequel to John Tucker, which was very exciting, and the whole cast was back on board," said Kebbel, 41. "We worked with the studio for a while and then we got a script in right before the writers' strike."

"Then post–writers' strike we were supposed to pick up and, like, full-force move forward into casting and, like, ready to rock," she continued. "And their slate totally changed. You know, that happens. That's the game with studios and the film business. But it got 'shelved,' which is not a permanent thing, but it is not currently active."
Still, Kebbel added, "I have faith, you know? The moment will come. But it's on pause for now."
John Tucker Must Die, currently streaming on Hulu, is a high school comedy about three girls who seek revenge on their mutual ex-boyfriend for cheating. In addition to Kebbel, Metcalfe and Bush, the cast also featured Ashanti, Brittany Snow and Penn Badgley.

In October 2024, Kebbel told PEOPLE she was still working for the followup movie to happen. "There’s a lot of talk about the sequel," she said at the time. "We're continuing to do our best to push forward on that."
She added, "I don’t quite know what to say without saying much, but it’s a special, special project. And I can say that everyone’s very supportive of a sequel."
