The late Hulk Hogan opens up about his mental health struggles after his divorce from his first ex-wife, Linda Hogan, in the new Netflix docuseries *Hulk Hogan: Real American*.

The final part of the doc, which details the life and wrestling career of the former WWE legend, features Hogan reflecting on the former couple's very public split. Hogan, who died at 71 of acute myocardial infarction — commonly known as a heart attack — participated in it before his death in July 2025.

Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, got married to Linda in 1983 and they had two children: daughter Brooke, now 37, and son Nick, 35. The family headlined the 2000s reality show *Hogan Knows Best *before the couple separated in 2007 and finalized their divorce in 2009.

In *Real American*, Hogan claims that giving Linda a large sum of money so that she'd disappear from his life left him "broke."

"I hit rock bottom," he says. "I gave Linda 70 percent of everything because I just didn't want to ever talk to her again, be with her. I never wanted to see her again. So, I gave her everything to get rid of her and after the divorce I had no money."

His frustration over it led to his bombshell interview with *Rolling Stone* in 2009.

"I could have turned everything into a crime scene, like O.J. [Simpson], cutting everybody's throat," Hogan told the outlet about his ex-wife at the time. "You live half a mile from the 20,000-square-foot home you can't go to anymore, you're driving through downtown Clearwater and see a 19-year-old boy driving your Escalade, and you know that a 19-year-old boy is sleeping in your bed, with your wife, and going to the Four Seasons, where you're paying for the toilet paper he wipes his ass with. I mean, I totally understand O.J. I get it."

Hogan was referring to the highly publicized criminal trial of former NFL player O.J. Simpson, who was accused of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994. Simpson was charged with their murders, but the jury ultimately acquitted him after a lengthy trial.

Hogan faced backlash for his comments to *Rolling Stone*, which greatly affected his mental health. "I went home, I started drinking and started eating pills, and I just went down this rabbit hole for a couple of days," he says in the final part of the docuseries. "Next thing I know, I'm sitting in front of my bathroom with a gun in my mouth and not knowing what I was doing, you know?"

"He was down, he was hurting," former wrestling executive and president of World Championship Wrestling Eric Bischoff says in the doc, describing the period as the "darkest, most devastating" part of Hogan's life.

Hogan calls his split from Linda "very tough" and credits Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, the second-largest wrestling entertainment group after WWE, with "saving" him financially.

Linda also appears in *Real American,* expressing how much she still cares about her ex-husband despite their falling-out. "It doesn't go away," she says of her feelings for him. "I wish things would've turned out differently for us. But then when he got sick, I realized that my love never faded for him."

"I still had love for him," she adds. "I really do. I still love him."
