Palestinian actor Mohammad Bakri died at age 72 on Wednesday, December 24, his son confirmed.
"With profound sorrow and grief, we announce the passing of our beloved father, the actor Mohammed Bakri," Saleh Bakri shared via Instagram, according to CNN.
Bakri—who was perhaps best known for his role as Abdul Qadir G'ulom on Homeland—died after suffering from heart and lung issues, AP reported.
"I am certain that Abu Saleh will remain in the memory of Palestinian people everywhere and all people of the free world," Bakri's cousin, Rafic, told a local media outlet following the actor's passing.
Bakri was born in Israel in November 1953. He studied acting and Arabic literature at Tel Aviv University, graduating in the 1970s. He began his career in the 1980s with theater shows and Israeli and Palestinian films before branching into international cinema.
In addition to acting, Bakri made a name for himself by directing the controversial 2002 documentary, Jenin, Jenin.
"[Bakri] remained steadfast, both in his upright stance for the rights of his people, and his commitment for a shared life and peace for Israeli and Palestinians," Israeli director Sinai Peter told Ynet of the late director, per CNN.
Bakri's last film, All That's Left of You, was recently short-listed for the 2026 Academy Awards for a potential Best International Feature nomination. Nominations will be announced on January 22, 2026.
